The Mazda CX-30 is a new crossover that !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! at the Geneva auto show. It’s supposed to slot in between the worthlessly tiny CX-3, and the CX-5, but Mazda didn’t want to call it CX-4 because... that would make too much sense.

When I first saw the CX-30, my immediate thought was that Mazda should ditch the cramped, tiny, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (because of how ridiculously impractical it is) CX-3 in the US and sell the CX-30 as the new CX-3.

My wife drives a CX-5 now, but before this she had a Subaru Impreza hatchback. When we were shopping for that car, I looked at a CX-3. After attempting and failing to get myself in the back seat without smushing the hell out of my knees, and viewing the woefully inadequate trunk, and I was like,

Kinja'd!!!

Point being, in a segment that’s supposed to be all about a small car on the outside with a lot of room on the inside, Mazda completely forgot about the second part. Or maybe they tried and just failed. Badly.

Part of the problem is the CX-3 is based on the Mazda 2 (otherwise known in the US as the Scion iA and now the Toyota Yaris) subcompact, and yet when Mazda turned the 2 into a crossover to make the CX-3, they did nothing to maximize the interior space. It’s bad.

The Honda HR-V that the CX-3 supposedly competes against is based on the Fit, and both of those cars are nice and roomy, and the CR-V is a lot roomier inside than the CX-5. The Mazdas are better to drive, but basically Mazda sucks at interior packaging efficiency compared to Honda.

The CX-30 is based on the new Mazda 3, and at least according to the pictures, has a totally fine and decent back seat and trunk.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Well...let’s hope for the CX-30's sake that driver’s seat is slid all the way back and the passenger seat is in a more normal position.

Anyway, without any fanfare, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . So, I guess we’re getting it! Maybe now Mazda will put the CX-3 out of its misery.

No, that’s what give it the “U” cred.

So Mazda is cashing in on the CUV-Coupe trend. That will cause some aneurisms among the FP commenters. Who’s bringing the popcorn?

The cladding keeps getting bigger though!

Dammit, most of these lifted hatchbacks would look great as just lifted hatchbacks.

but that’s how you know it’s a crossover.

The cladding is not getting bigger; the rest of the car is getting smaller.

Seriously though, I agree.  The cladding on these things is stupid.

I thought we always knew the CX-30 was coming to the US.

They can’t call it the CX-4 because the CX-4 is a different model in China . Most likely to avoid internal confusion at the company.

It seems that almost all SUVs are relatively tiny inside. While my Mazda5 was in for an oil change I checked out the CX-5 and CX-9. Despite being bigger on the outside than my 5 they felt more cramped inside. It reminds me of when I checked out a Camaro Z/28 back in the ‘80s. Despite being huge in comparison to my GTI it was amazingly cramped inside. Terrible use of space.

So really, the CX-3 should be the CX-2 and the CX-30 should be the CX-3.

Am I right?

Yes, minivans are more space efficient than SUVs. But some SUVs are better at packaging than others. Mazda SUVs tend to have long hoods relative to their overall length so the cabins are smaller.

Comparing Mazda to Honda, the Mazdas are an inch or two smaller than their Honda competitors, but the Hondas are ridiculously roomier inside than the Mazdas.

My wife liked the size of the CX-5 the most and the HR-V next after that. She felt like the CR-V was too big even though going by the numbers it’s not much larger on the outside. The much roomier interior and higher cowl & beltline made it feel like a lot bigger of a car than the CX-5 .

The HR-V is the main reason the CX-3 irks me so much. I’m 5'11" and I can sit behind myself in the back of the HR-V no problem at all and have legroom to spare, but the CX-3 is impossible unless I splay my knees on either side of the front seat.

I would have thought it to be more logical that the CX-30 would be the replacement for the CX-4 in China, and then sold globally as the CX-4 instead.

I guess the current CX-4 isn’t old enough, or maybe it’s cheap enough (i.e. tooling paid for) to sell in China, where typical MSRPs are much lower.

I love the styling of the CX-3 but was always off put by the size. For the price it just seemed absurdly small. I’m not a big guy at all either and always felt it was just too small. They’re fun to chuck into a corner but for the same money I’d chose something else.

It’s a lifted hatchback crossover, of course it’s coming to the US.

Cute dog but my wife and I needed at least one car that can comfortably fit 2 adult humans in the back seat when we're in the front. Because my car sorta kinda not really accomplishes that task.
